When Pre-Orders Start

For the Oculus Rift, pre-orders actually start today, Feb. 16th.

They’ll ship on March 28th, and the Rift will be available from retailers in April.

The HTC Vive has actually been delayed. It was supposed to have debuted last year but revisions pushed it back to an end-of-February pre-order and shipping in April. Many people who have seen the latest version say that the delay was the right call for a better and lighter model.

What You’ll Need For A Virtual Reality Set Up

If you are looking to get the Oculus Rift there will be PCs that you can pre-order built ready to handle all of the awesomeness. But if you love your PC setup already, the Oculus Rift has released a hardware recommendation list:

I was inspired to write this blog post by a gamer girl on twitter. You can look up our exchange on the Evodesk twitter page.

She wrote that a coworker called her “weird” for wanting a gaming chair for Valentine’s Day instead of the the standard stuff. Succinctly, we responded:

Game Developer Barbie Has A Standing Desk

Barbie is keyed in to what’s new: from the awesome job to the healthier standing desk… or in this case a blue cylinder.

My friend, who is a woman in the gaming industry, believes that a Game Developer Barbie is awesome. In fact, she strikes an eerie resemblance with glasses and bright red hair. As one of very few women in her field (and the only one at several companies she worked for), this Barbie job could show girls that they don’t need Brian and Steven to be a girl gamer.

If you don’t remember, last year there was a big backslash from computer engineer Barbie. In a book that has since been discontinued, there were instances like this that made readers cringe.

The text says:

“It will go faster if Brian and I help,” offers Steven.

While sure, three people can be faster than one, readers wondered, did it have to be two men stepping in and taking over? After, Mattel released an apology saying, “The portrayal of Barbie in this specific story doesn’t reflect the Brand’s vision for what Barbie stands for.” In the end, Feminist Hacker Barbie called on people to make new text for the book giving her more skills.

Because of the misstep, this is Barbie’s second chance at entering the tech world. With all of the encouraging changes that Barbie has already made, we are confident that this will be a huge success. As a bonus, her standing desk accessory is on point (although we may be a bit biased).

One website is already asking for images of Game Developer Barbie in the real world, and despite the trolls, my personal favorite is  from DistractedObserver.

The caption explains that since Game Developer Barbie’s first game will put an end to cyber bullying, the United Nations wants to help. Now that sounds like an awesome playtime scenario:

“Hey Barbie, want to pick out shoes?”

“Sure, after I crush this impassioned speech to the U.N.”

“Cool!”

How Long Teens Play Video Games

In 2010, the Kaiser Family did a study all about how much time teens spend watching and listening to media, and the results have shown just how much technology has impacted the art of growing up. They broke up the different types of media and measured how many hours the kids and teens spend gaming and watching TV each day. The subjects were between the ages of eight and eighteen and here are the stats from 1999.

TV: 3 hours 47 minutes

Music: 1 hour 48 minutes

Computer: 27 minutes

Video Games: 26 minutes

Movies: 18 minutes

Print: 43 minutes

Total Media Exposure: 7 hours 29 minutes

Now fast forward to 2009 and see the difference technology has made:

TV: 4 hours 29 minutes

Music: 2 hours 31 minutes

Computer: 1 hour 29 minutes

Video Games: 1 hour 13 minutes

Movies: 25 minutes

Print: 38 minutes

Total Media Exposure: 10 hours 45 minutes

Sadly the only number that went down was the amount of time teens spent reading. But if we look at computer and video game time (we are a gaming desk company after all) they both went up by about an hour a day. And that part is especially important due to the health risks of sitting for hours each day. We have already talked about the dangers of sitting, so if they are going to game, why not make it safer?
