Since this is the 30th anniversary, it’s going to be extra special. Here are just a handful of the awesome things that are at SXSW this year.

For films there are tons of premieres that are happening. From the “spirited sequel” to Dazed and Confused (Everybody Wants Some) to intense documentaries like Beware the Slenderman, there is a movie screening for everyone. Honestly the inner child in me can’t wait for Pee-wee’s Big Holiday while the sci-fi lover in me wants to watch Midnight Special all about a father trying to protect his son who has powers. But the winner might be the Master Pancake Saint Patrick’s Day special.

For those of you unfamiliar with it, Master Pancake is when they screen a movie and people with microphones make comments that are hysterical the entire time. Think of it like a live Mystery Science Theater 3000 that you are invited it. This year they are roasting Leprechaun 4 which I believe takes place in space. Yes, this is just a sample of the wonderful originality that comes out of SXSW.

For music, there are honestly too many venues, performances, and shows to list. Even if you were to get all of the concerts, there are so many surprise shows and live bar performances that you could spend the entire trip just focused on music and you would hardly scratch the surface. Here is a tiny idea of the music scene to help you choose.

And last but not least, there is a slew of tech innovations that push the limits every year. For example Hishori Ishiguro brought his team of androids and geminoids (a completely new term to me) including one that was his double. This android looked just like him and even had conversations with audience members.

For those of you who don’t know, The Division takes place after a virus has hit New York City. You are one of the soldiers sent to keep the peace, discover the truth, and help rebuild the city. The amazing part to me is the “Dark Zone” or pvp area where anything goes. You can choose to trust AI or other players (agents) or you can “go rogue” and attack, trying to steal their gear for yourself. This gray area brings choices back to shooter games that will have real results and repercussions other than different colors. #sorrynotsorry #MassEffect

When Pre-Orders Start

For the Oculus Rift, pre-orders actually start today, Feb. 16th.

They’ll ship on March 28th, and the Rift will be available from retailers in April.

The HTC Vive has actually been delayed. It was supposed to have debuted last year but revisions pushed it back to an end-of-February pre-order and shipping in April. Many people who have seen the latest version say that the delay was the right call for a better and lighter model.

What You’ll Need For A Virtual Reality Set Up

If you are looking to get the Oculus Rift there will be PCs that you can pre-order built ready to handle all of the awesomeness. But if you love your PC setup already, the Oculus Rift has released a hardware recommendation list:

• 8GB+ RAM
• Windows 7 SP1 or newer

I was inspired to write this blog post by a gamer girl on twitter. You can look up our exchange on the Evodesk twitter page.

She wrote that a coworker called her “weird” for wanting a gaming chair for Valentine’s Day instead of the the standard stuff. Succinctly, we responded:

Game Developer Barbie Has A Standing Desk

Barbie is keyed in to what’s new: from the awesome job to the healthier standing desk… or in this case a blue cylinder.

My friend, who is a woman in the gaming industry, believes that a Game Developer Barbie is awesome. In fact, she strikes an eerie resemblance with glasses and bright red hair. As one of very few women in her field (and the only one at several companies she worked for), this Barbie job could show girls that they don’t need Brian and Steven to be a girl gamer.

If you don’t remember, last year there was a big backslash from computer engineer Barbie. In a book that has since been discontinued, there were instances like this that made readers cringe.

The text says:

“It will go faster if Brian and I help,” offers Steven.

While sure, three people can be faster than one, readers wondered, did it have to be two men stepping in and taking over? After, Mattel released an apology saying, “The portrayal of Barbie in this specific story doesn’t reflect the Brand’s vision for what Barbie stands for.” In the end, Feminist Hacker Barbie called on people to make new text for the book giving her more skills.

Because of the misstep, this is Barbie’s second chance at entering the tech world. With all of the encouraging changes that Barbie has already made, we are confident that this will be a huge success. As a bonus, her standing desk accessory is on point (although we may be a bit biased).

One website is already asking for images of Game Developer Barbie in the real world, and despite the trolls, my personal favorite is  from DistractedObserver.

The caption explains that since Game Developer Barbie’s first game will put an end to cyber bullying, the United Nations wants to help. Now that sounds like an awesome playtime scenario:

“Hey Barbie, want to pick out shoes?”

“Sure, after I crush this impassioned speech to the U.N.”

“Cool!”

Despite the research, and the testimonials, and the results, some people still question if a standing desk is a fad. Well, let’s take a walk into the some of the most forward-thinking companies and see.. oh, hey look. There are standing desks.

From Google, to Facebook, from AOL to Twitter, these are just a handful of some of the tech companies that are outfitting their employees with what they believe is the best way to work.

At Facebook when multiple employees read an article about the health benefits of a standing desk and approached management, the boss listened. In 2011, when there were over 2,000 employees, between 200 and 250 standing desks were requested- as many a eight a week.

The Wall Street Journal interviewed a Google employee who worked at a standing desk and he said, “I don’t get the 3 o’clock slump anymore. I feel active all day long.”

At Google standing desks are a part of their wellness program. You don’t even need a doctor’s note to request a standing desk (because standing is is beneficial to anyone before they get a health issue).

Tech companies are trying to recruit the smartest, the brightest, and the most brilliant people and they are trying to make those people as happy and healthy as possible. That’s why they offer their employees standing desks.
